If all goes as planned, we will be closing on our new property on Tuesday or Wednesday. My wife had a baby and the kids are getting adjusted to a new school. It has been a busy couple of weeks to say the least.
Our goal is to start a farm. We want to grow food for our family and for those around us. We are preparing to do that. But it’s a busy time and we are not off to an incredibly fast start.
For whatever reason, my wife hasn’t been overly anxious to get out into the field (a field we don’t own quite yet) either while she was 9-months pregnant or with a 4 day old baby in her arms. My wife is pretty tough, but I’m going to cut her a little slack on this one.
I have a job that is almost full time. While I don’t work every day, I’m paid for 36 hours a week and I put in at least that with preparation and all that it takes to teach 5 classes.
So we have been prioritizing our time and so far it has gone to family and work. The farm is on a back burner for a bit.
We also have some prioritization to do when it comes to finances. We bought a tiller this week because we will need to break ground and that will require a tiller (no tractor on this little farm).
If we want to start selling produce at markets in April, we will need to have things planted in February (that is soon!) And you can’t plant outside in Washington in February, so we will need a greenhouse. That is high on our priority list at this point.
I’m not sure if we’ll make it for the April markets this year or not. We certainly want to, but I have to get my classwork done and it leaves a limited amount of time for farm work.
Then there is the weather. We had some snow a couple of days ago and then heavy rain ever since and we have some wet fields. I’m confident that they will still be good for growing vegetables, but there is just too much water to start tilling because tilling wet soil just works to compact the soil.
Oh, and we don’t own the land yet. There are a few things we are really trying to wait to own this place before we get started. Tilling is one of them.
I am going to post the latest family photo (except me) and move on to things of higher priority.
