We are in the process of moving into our house. It’s not an especially nice house, but it will work out very well for us. One of the big issues that I am having with it is the smell. The last people that lived here smoked and it really stinks. Add that to the fact that the people we are buying it from are losing loads of money on it and we are getting a house that was not kept especially clean.
Last night I started cleaning to get rid of the smell. Normally, cleaning shouldn’t be a big deal, but I take special pride in avoiding the nasty cleaning products that damage the environment. I am also sensitive to chemical scents, they make me sick, which is funny because generally I have a terrible sense of smell. If I end up sitting behind the lady at church wearing too much perfume, I have to leave because it literally makes me sick. Household chemical scents generally do the same thing.
Last night I started the cleaning process by wiping down the walls with apple cider vinegar. The smell is a bit strong for me at first, but it fades quickly and it is a lot better than the cigarette smell.
We will also have to do some carpet cleaning. We’ll borrow a steam cleaner for that, but we will also use a generous amount of baking soda in the cleaning process because it takes care of smells.
Vinegar and baking soda also work miracles on toilets and other fixtures. So the ultimate point is that chemical cleaners are bad and the alternatives are less expensive and better for the environment.
