I think about writing all the time, but if haven’t figured out how to go about it yet. Things are changing and I have a lot of catching up to do.
First, I got a tenure track position at a local community college, so I have been spending more time teaching and preparing to teach. I love what I do, but it has certainly taken time away from our farm and our goals here.
Second, we’ve decided that we are going to spend some time moving away from ‘farming’ and moving more toward permaculture.
Actually the change in job and the move toward permaculture are the same thing. Here’s what happened… Last year at this time I was working part time at the community college. We were also farming because the part time gig needed some supplementation, and I had the time to do that. In the late summer, I was hired for the full time position, and my hours at work increased substantially, but we were also committed to our farm responsibilities. I was working to prepare for classes and my wife was running the farm and my kids were running amuck.
Last year burnt us out. We still love growing things and we want to do a small farm, but with five kids and a full time job we decided to scale back. As we were scaling back, we still wanted to be producing food, so instead of spending as much time on growing vegetables, we are working more on creating a living forest with a large variety of foods. We have purchased nut trees, and fruit trees and berry bushes and all sorts of different plants to make a multilevel food production area. Of course it will take many years for the berries to produce and a decade or more for the nut trees to be productive, but that is the direction we are going.
Both my wife and I are excited to spend our free time working on infrastructure projects to make our land highly productive with perennial plants. I’m excited by the potential and ready to get started. We still have substantial space to grow vegetables, that we can use in the future, but for this year we are going to grow a 1/4 size garden.
If all goes well, I will be back to posting more regularly to track our progress…. And having found my password should help that significantly.
