We are done with markets for the year,so we have essentially finished a year on the farm. Except for cleaning up the fields, tilling and getting ready for next year.
Anyway,we’ve been evaluating our marketing. We decided that we need a niche. I certainly understand that, but I don’t want a niche. I want a mostly self-sustaining farm that grows a variety of vegetables (and fruits within a couple of years). I want to be a farm that harvests wool and meat from sheep and uses most of the animal in meaningful ways. I want to be a farm that has free range chickens that live primarily off of grazing and insects with only occasional supplementation of feed. I want to have systems for making and using compost. I want our niche to be doing everything.
I know that isn’t how it works, but that is my dream, so don’t mess with it. I would like our farm to be a resource where people come to learn so they can go and improve their sustainability. I want classes to be accessible to all since I think that sustainability is something everyone should be working on, not just those who can afford it.
One of the big changes that we will try for next year is to use markets more for marketing and less for sales, although we will still be selling there too. There is so much that I am excited about, but I have so little time.
