To start, let me just say that I think that chickens are ridiculous animals, but at the same time they are fascinating. They run in packs (let’s call them flocks so I don’t sound dumb) with each flock lead by a rooster. The rooster will keep his harem safe and lead them around the yard.
As we have allowed our flock to naturally expand, we ended up with two roosters. One of the roosters took dominance of the main yard and the other learned to escape the yard and create his own territory, although he still came home to his coop every night. As the weaker rooster, his harem was not especially impressive, he had one hen that followed him to the neighbor’s yard each day.
All was fine until the neighbors invested in their own flock of chickens. While this was the weaker of the roosters that I have, he took the dominant role over the neighbor’s flock. Eventually he moved in to the neighbor’s coop.
Yesterday our neighbor showed up carrying our rooster by the feet. Knowing that there was no way to keep the rooster in our yard and knowing that he would go back to the neighbor’s flock, we had the rooster for dinner. I believe that leaves a chicken of ours with dual citizenship, but she lays eggs, so I don’t think the neighbor will mind.
