I posted about making soap without using a scale back in August of last year. I made the soap, and then we moved a couple of times and life got kind of hectic.
The soap got left in a bucket in a garage to cure. It didn’t cure especially well. I found the soap, which was still uncut in a long tube-like shape, and decided to finish the job.
The soap was extremely slimy. I think the recipe I used had way too much fat in it compared to lye. This makes sense because I used a density that I found online for lye crystals. I’m guessing that when I measured the volume of lye crystals, there were lots of air pockets in between the crystals which made my arithmetic faulty.
I had thought of that when I was making the soap, but I didn’t want to add too much lye or you end up with a soap that will eat your skin off, and I’m not a big fan of that idea, so I erred on the side of over-fatted, slimy soap.
I took the slimy tube of soap and I cut it into slices and then I cut the slices in half, which made a bunch of half round bars of soap. They were still pretty slimy, so I put them on a piece of cardboard and set them on top of our clothes dryer. Eventually I had to replace the cardboard because it had absorbed a lot of oil.
Today, the soap finally seemed dry enough to give it a shot. So I used the new soap. I don’t remember the recipe I used, but you can find it here. It turned out pretty good. It had a nice lather and it rinsed of very easily. While I was showering, it almost seemed like it rinsed off too easily. When I was done lathering up, I went to rinse, but I felt like I was already rinsed. That is not typical of the soaps I made, so I was a bit concerned. But it still left my skin feeling really clean afterward. And while I don’t have sensitive skin, it didn’t seem like it had too much lye in it. Although I would hate for someone to try it and have a bad reaction and I’m afraid that my skin would never let me know if there was too much lye.
So I’ll call the soap without a scale a success. I did the math and the soap did what it was supposed to do. Next time I’ll just need to make a bigger batch because I am running low on soap and I refuse to ever buy any. It’s so easy to make and I can make such a superior product at home that I can’t buy that stuff in the store.
